First official breast badge issued by the NYFD to exempt firemen, 1855. N.Y. Fire Department #502 Following an act of legislature on April 3, 1855 all on duty firemen were required to wear either this type of badge or a leather helmet. Badges were made of Prince's metal, bearing the words "New York Fire Department", each badge bearing a distinct number, in raised figures, of white metal. The badge worn by exempt firemen was composed of white metal, with the figures of Prince's metal. Badges were struck from serparate dies and numbered as the commissioners of the FD directed.
